March Gardening Tips

Posted: March 01, 2016

Tip #1
Remove ONLY the dead leaves on evergreen perennials, such as Pulmonaria and Heuchera.

Solution
Be careful not to damage early leaves from emerging perennials, as the new plant will look thin.

Tip #2
Prune back the gold colored branches of Dogwoods.

Solution
These branches are infected by drought-induced golden canker fungus. Make the cut directly above a healthy bud. Remember to disinfect pruners between each cut with rubbing alcohol.

Tip #3
Prune summer and fall blooming shrubs to allow for quick recovery on the plants. Late winter pruning will not interfere with summer blooms.

Solution
Start by removing damaged and broken branches. For diseased branches disinfect pruners when done.
